US government doesn’t grasp that sanctions will only further motivate their internal technology development, until it surpasses US tech. China isn’t North Korea. They have plenty of local talent and capabilities.
The best way to keep China in check is to keep them dependent on the global economy. As long as they are, they’ll do their best not to fuck that up.
But they see what’s going on in the US and know that it’s in their best interest to become independent of us. They’re gearing up for war because they want Taiwan. And then if they take Taiwan, the world is fucked because then China basically owns semiconductor production.
The US has abused sanctions so much that there’s basically a parallel economy being set up that’s not using USD.
Your so close. It’s not even sanctions, there are still tariffs on many things back from the Trump administration that still haven’t been repealed.
Trump does what establishment democrats want to but know they can’t get away with.

China is smart. They have no reason to be dependent on the US. They have a robust and competitive technology sector. They can get their raw materials from Africa, which they’ve been investing in while the US did nothing.
US-China relations have only ‘soured’ in recent years because China has become a legitimate competitor instead of just a factory.
This is why we now see so much FUD centered around Chinese technology. It’s really opened my eyes to how effective propaganda is in getting people to have an opinion on things they know nothing about.
It’s not about long term goals, it’s about short term profits.
And when sanctions start to fail that goal they will start another proxy war. It’s not like rich ppl are gonna die in it.
No country on its own is able to build high end chips. Currently you need at least Germany for technology, the Netherlands for the machines and Taiwan for manufacturing. In total over 300 companies just build parts for the machine.
No, China on its own won’t be able to get close or even surpass.
Nevertheless, quite impressive that they went from being 10 years behind (18 nm) just two years ago to 3 years behind (5 nm). We have to wait and see if the claim of Huawei having 5 nm is actually true, but if so, they are closing the gap really fast – which of course makes everyone wonder how. And the track record of China and trade secrets makes it not a far stretch to at least consider theft. But of course it could also just mean that they are really good at reverse engineering.
They just released an 8 core x86 processor with DDR5 support running at 3.7GHz, which is basically the equivalent of 5 year old technology compared to historical intel and AMD CPUs. China also carries the entire RISC-V linux development because its an open standard unlike x86 and ARM.
They most definitely will eventually catch up, especially since China already knows how to keep the process non-reliant on globalization. Something chip companies do not like admitting is a weakness.
The real crime here is the USA acting shocked and surprised at any of this. They peddle every industrial advantage and then do a complete 180 when someone else tops them because it means its a market competitor and they can’t just keep making morbillions in X industry.
Even the NSA does this. They sat on EternalBlue for probably a decade thinking “oh yeah no way someone’s gonna find this insane exploit”, and lo and behold someone leaked their exploit.
Its always strategic advantage until it isn’t.
The US is just trying to help China with their “Made in China 2025” plan.
The 5G bullshit started because Huawei was ahead of everyone else in 5G tech. First the Obama administration, then Trump, then Biden all attempted to cripple Huawei’s ability to produce 5g commodities in order to protect the development of domestic production.
What is remarkable is how quickly the US discarded the ‘free trade’ pillar of its neoliberal ideology as a competitive threat to a critical technology emerged. The actual ideological principal is hegemony, not ‘free trade’.
The US was only pro free trade because it let them use their tech advantage (printing presses at the time) to flood less developed nations with their products and propaganda. :P
It’s free trade when they need/want market access and everything else when they need to defend their lead. The semi-conductor business in Taiwan is similar.
