Yeah, a switch was flipped in Canadian’s minds because of the conflict. My old coworker is from Russia and was harassed recently at a library and it’s like, he was there picking some books up with his grandaughter. Be normal.
It’s like there’s a lot of pent up racism in Canada, and people are just looking for an acceptable outlet.
I had people yell at me because i mentioned that it’d be fun to take a trip down the Volga river once. God forbid thinking about Russians as human beings.
That’s just so grim.
Literally all i said was “it looks pretty and has a lot of history that I think i’d like to see in person”, which was enough to have me branded a traitor. “Hate the government, not the people” unless it’s an official enemy state, in which case it’s on sight.

Agreed, I think most people looking in from outside underestimate how virulent things are here. As someone who’s ethnic Chinese, honestly I could see limited internment camps in the mid-term future. And the simmering widespread hatred against Indians, Muslims, First Nations, and (for those who buy into the lib drivel) Russians is spiraling just as badly.
I feel like- more than even the US, a general malaise dominates the country, one that I am not immune to as well (hence why I want to get the hell out). Economically and otherwise everyone knows this country is irredeemably corrupt, economically spiraling, and that their livelihoods will only get worse in the near future- and similarly to Weimar Germany, the already inherently racist, divided society is finding scapegoats to target as a result.

I too am doubtful a direct confrontation is coming (in the short term based on this text) but i am convinced by this text that they will escalate until they get some kind of reaction from you so do protect yourself and prepare.

I actually just picked up a small wireless motion sensing cam that I’m going to leave on the dashboard. If I’m lucky maybe he’ll come by to check the car and I’ll know who it is. And yeah gonna have to pay attention in the near future in case this does escalate into something physical.

But this is clearly premeditated given that he’s been stalking me and my wife, and went through the trouble of figuring out my cell number.

Nothing I can think of IRL, like I haven’t had any bad interactions with the neighbours or anything. Whoever it is has been careful not to make it obvious they’ve been watching me. I started doing martial arts back in university and kept it up for like 20 years now. Of course, you never know if the guy will have a knife or a gun, so still definitely concerning. But I’m as well prepared for that as I’m going to be I figure. More worried for my partner, and I’m thinking we should order some bear spray for her to carry. I did get a cam, so we’ll see if that catches anything.

Yup I’m from Canada, I did file a report with the hate crime unit, so we’ll see where that goes. The messages have been unhinged, but stopping short of being direct threats so far. If the cops really did want to find this guy they’d have to contact Iristel, the company that provides the sms service, and they could get the identity of whoever sent the message to my number that way. It wouldn’t be that hard to do. They did say they’ll get back to me, so I’ll post an update on how this develops.

Yeah that’s what I figure. A friend of mine said something similar happened with him, and what he ended up doing was to get a lawyer to open a civil case which leads to discovery where they figure out who the other party is. It cost him around 3k to do it, but if this keeps going might be worth it.

Something to be wary of is, iirc, a lot of stuff becomes illegal in Canada if you’re carrying it for self-defense reasons. Like owning a baseball bat is fine, owning a baseball bat and telling a cop (hypothetically, of course we wouldn’t talk to a cop) that you’re carrying it in case someone attacks you is not fine. So you’d need to go with something that has a plausible reason you’d be carrying it that isn’t this racist asshole I think
I was just reading up on this. We have some weird rules here. Basically, you’re not allowed to carry any item with express purpose of self defense, but you can use it incidentally if you had one on you for a different purpose. And there’s also the whole proportional force aspect.
It’s probably set up like that so that people don’t walk around armed to the teeth for “self-defence” reasons like they do in the states.

That’s been my thinking as well, I’ve been screenshotting every message I get just to build up a paper trail. If it gets physical, it’s going to be easier to prove I was defending myself if I can establish a pattern of harassment on his part.
