I hate the capslock thing. I sometimes feel like I’m the only person who regularly uses capslock (for C macro names and SQL when programming, but also for typing acronyms).
I don’t mind the function key thing. Even from memory I can say that in a browser F5 = refresh and F11 = fullscreen. But kids probably are less likely to know those these days so a label could be helpful.
The way the article makes it sound is, if individual employees download OracleJDK while on the company network, and use it for small personal scripts or automation, then that might be enough to trigger Oracle to act.
If your company is large enough, then enough employees may have done that to make you a reasonable target for litigation if you don’t work something out with Oracle. And Oracle is an expert at litigation.
I think that the best defense for a large company would be to IP block all Oracle domains and periodically scan employee laptops for any Oracle products (especially JDK and VirtualBox guest additions) and delete them.
You really have to treat anything that Oracle touches as malware if you want to protect yourself.
Seems like a puzzle platformer with dress-up and other “comfy” features. Could be interesting.
CrossCode. It’s a 2D ARPG with a good story and well-designed world with puzzles, exploration, and combat.
I did some research into this out of curiosity. It turns out that the 30 day requirement for local and state elections was decided by the Supreme Court in Dunn v. Blumstein (1972) as an application of the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment, on the basis that states already allowed long-time residents to register to vote up to 30 days before an election and that restricting new residents from doing so was arbitrary.
That seems like pretty solid precedent and I would expect that this rule will never change, barring exceptional Supreme Court shenanigans.

They actually did do something similar to this but with beer. They extracted ancient yeast DNA from 45mya that was preserved in amber and used it to brew beer.

The Target app is the best that I’ve seen for customers. It won’t plan your route, but you can search for items and it will tell you the aisle, location within the aisle, and stock level for any item at your local store.

It’s great when simple tools let you extend them like this. It may be kinda hacky sometimes but oftentimes a small, tightly-scoped extension that you develop for yourself can give you a lot of value.
Canonically, the True Power (of the Dark One) was granted only to those who served him, whereas the One Power was open to all channelers. This makes a “One Power” subscription very funny to me.

+1. The joy of camping (for me) is that your experience is directly related to your preparation. You plan your location, activities, meals, sleeping arrangements, and companions, doing all of the research and investment up front to make each of those work well, taking into account weather and conditions, and then you get to enjoy a trip where everything goes well with people you care about, with the satisfaction that the experience that you are having is the direct result of your actions.
Of course, the pain of camping is that any and all of the above can go wrong, and then, indeed, it’s probably gonna suck.
Montreal has a few neat things like this. The mobile lounges (inspired by D.C.), the metro system that uses rubber tires (inspired by Paris), and the underground tunnel network connecting downtown (I think this one was original, and also inspired similar networks in other cities).
I feel like the spirit of techno-optimism must have shined a little brighter in Montreal for a few years, and so today we have this neat reminders of other ways that our cities could’ve been built. It’s a lovely place.
I was surprised to find that non-alcoholic beers specifically do still make me sleepy. I looked into it and there is some research that says that other compounds in beer could be responsible, or it could just be the placebo effect since I’m used to feeling sleepy after drinking beer.
I think that’s normal as well. What I meant to convey is: if someone is an alcoholic, then they are likely to be in the first group. I didn’t mean to imply the opposite: if someone is in the first group, then they are likely to be an alcoholic.
Alcohol has different effects on people based on their genetics. It makes some people feel amazing, and if they keep drinking they continue to feel amazing for hours. It makes some people immediately feel awful. It makes some people feel good but also very sleepy. The first group is much more likely to experience alcoholism.
The taste is a separate thing. I am part of the third group but I’ll have a single drink on occasion, and I enjoy the way that beer, wine, spirits, and strong cocktails taste.
I often drink non-alcoholic beers or mocktails for the taste, because alcohol is after all a poison and it is a good idea to limit consumption.
My favorite has always been crunch bars. So good.
