Welcome! Feel free to introduce yourself here in the c/main channel if you’d like.
Hi everyone. I showed up here because I saw Seahorse at the Akron pride fest with his awesome flag, told some of my likeminded friends about it, and they found his post. I showed up to applaud him, and decided to just stick around.
I used to use Reddit, with a very carefully curated list of subreddits, which I used replace my Twitter constant stimulation requirement. I had to ditch Reddit the day they killed Apollo and won’t be returning unless they reverse that decision.
I’m happy to have found this place, it’s nice.
I’m from Akron Ohio, work (remotely) in tech (job based in San Francisco), and do not like cops, landlords, or the ruling class really.
I feel like I’d fit in here pretty well.
Greetings! My name is Matt and I live in Indianapolis. I’m migrating over from a single-user instance. You can also find me over at @leopardboy@netmonkey.xyz. Thanks!
From Chicago. I made the plunge to Mastodon (and here) after the Reddit shenanigans and just seeing the repeated bad-faith policies by Twitter. I have been using redirector and libredirect for the last month or two to actively decide who I give my data to just as a fun experiment into best practices.
I think it’s slowly starting to be clear that this type of setup will be the way forward for the more tech-savvy, privacy-focused users, and hopefully/eventually it hits the mainstream as well, but otherwise, it’s just self-selecting into the type of people I want to be around, which will probably be better for my mental health anyways.
I’m into cycling, trading, sci-fi and FOSS. Currently reading The Expanse and taking a sabbatical year from work
Edit: Just want to encourage people to engage w/ and create content over the next few weeks. Activity and friendly faces are probably the most determining factor in whether someone becomes an active user or just browses for a few minutes
I’m also reading the expanse. I’m just on book 2 though…my reading time is limited.
It’s a great read but a lot to books! Enjoy!
I just started Leviathan Wakes on Libby. It feels like a slow start… I cant tell if thats actually the case or I am just too burnt out.
Thank you for your edit to your post. I agree, engagement is key. I never posted on read, just consumed. Your edit encouraged me to be different this time. I want lemmy to succeed and grow. Liking what I see so far!
I have been meaning to get into the expanse. I’ve heard such great things about the show, and the books were often recommended on the various books subreddits when searching for sci-fi books. Will have to start that series.
hi from Peoria, IL. Been here about 6 months and just found the docs, lol. Thanks to all you admin types driving. Good times.
Hello! I’m a Wisconsinite soon moving to Minneapolis. Born and raised in western Wisconsin.
Long-time fedi user here. I only ever used reddit for reference purposes since search engines are thoroughly broken, and I am hoping to build myself a feed here that can do some of that same research shortcutting. I don’t know how much I’ll post, but I’m here!
Howdy. I’m a life-long Ohioan. I was never a Reddit person, but I figured I’d give lemmy a try. I’m on Mastodon as @stinerman@mastodon.social.
Just joined. Also, transitioning away from Reddit. From Pittsburgh (hence yinzer in my user name), then DC area for @ a decade, & last 2 decades in a state run by folks who think the Desantis nuttery is worth emulating. Lefty, divorced dad of 2, who I’m glad inherited the don’t sit by quietly but stand up against bullies from their parents.
Nature is my go-to self-care & main hobbies. Nature photography & hiking, nature documentaries, learning about the regions native flora, fauna, geology, & environmental degradation, etc.
Hi there from Madison, WI! I am the developer of Voyager :)
Decided to set up with a more localized instance instead of Lemmy.world. Was born in St. Louis, but grew up across Missouri and Indiana before settling down in a quiet little corner of Ohio.
@seahorse@midwest.social Is there a like a standard amount new people should donate to the server?
No, whatever you want to donate is welcome
Alrighty, I think $10 is probably doable for me, hopefully that helps
Thanks!
Course, need to offset the amount of shitposting I do
I just noticed that librepay doesn’t have 2fa, does the instance have an open collective page?
Crap, I thought they’d make that feature available by now. No, I haven’t set up an opencollective yet unfortunately.
Guess I’ll just use long password and maybe put a cap on my debit card
Just setup the donation on librepay! Though I’ll say that I feel a bit uneasy that it doesn’t have 2fa. Do you think setting up opencollective might be a feasible thing or should I maybe look at getting a disposable debit card for librepay?
I looked into opencollective and it’s a bit more involved than liberapay. I think I’d have to register as a 501c3. I would just set up a strong password with Bitwarden or similar.
oh, yeah, I thought it was more like patreon, oh well I’ll just go with the strong password
I looked at it, if you choose the “any community” option it’ll be more straight forward
Been replacing windows, mac, IBM db2 mainframe servers with rack mount i86 linux since ~2000. Everything is moving to hosted hardware VMs and away from in-house hardware. It’s just cheaper to outsource server maintenance. semi-retired since 2017. Typing isn’t my favorite activity. coordination is failing. Be kind. Oh yeah, never used ‘social media’ much until 2016. wasted time on slashdot, digg, forums, tech and motorcycles a lot. Found a good thread on reddit about a garage door opener I bought. https://stackoverflow.com/ for scripting. had a fun guild on WoW for a few years. SenJin Defiant lol
Hi, former Wisconsinite in exile, trying to move back.
Hi!
Ohioan here… I too am a recent reddit refugee… anyone else having digg deja vu?..
Likes: Nerdy things, Video Games, Animals, Ohio sports teams, Music, Traveling
Been on Mastodon for a few months (suck it twitter) and with Reddit’s recent money grab figured I’d check out other parts of the fediverse.
Was not around for the Digg exodus, but I’m hoping this will be the historic Reddit exodus. I had felt this would be coming, especially after hearing about the Reddit IPO. Unfortunately these things always turn products to shit. And here we are. Hoping we can all reclaim the internet. Feel I’m living the cyberpunk dystopian future when I jump online nowadays. Reddit was my last internet refuge. But I had to leave. I was a dedicated Apollo user and have to take a principled stand after what they did to Selig. Reddit account deleted and excited for what the future holds for Lemmy.
Another former reddit user from the Twin Cities here. Enjoying learning about lemmy so far, still trying to figure out how it works! Big fan of disc golf, board games, books, and video games.
