You can see how big of a difference it makes when looking at worldwide revenue compared to profit, so clearly taking a percent of one number is very different than the other. Of course the studios need to pay writers and actors more, but one of my pet peaves is poor data visualizations.
The question is however are they using real world accounting for that math, or Hollywood accounting?
