    The post (originally made by u/even_idea_1764) was taken down for no reason a while ago and I remembered it since its very very relevant right now. It shares the incentive referees have to stick to the on field decision, even if it is wrong, because correcting it will them them demoted/punished. This is noted in the 6th point of the article.

    In his first match, he’d wrongly awarded a penalty, before reversing the decision on the recommendation of VAR. This error had earned him a one-match demotion to the Championship.

    I will admit this article is overly sympathetic the referees which I disagree with, but not all their decisions are driven by incompetency
