Hit a point where it wasn’t fun and I dreaded practicing daily. So I’m taking a week off, then I’ll look for some other tools to use for a while because my current learning plan has gone stale.

I’ve been focusing on listening comprehension lately, so listening to podcasts in my target language at slowed speed. Supplemented by my pen and notebook for jotting down new vocab words and grammar tips.

Duolingo just updated their Chinese lessons. Which means there are a bunch of words in earlier sections I don’t know and my progress for a bit messed up. It’s not the end of the world, but I’m seriously considering deleting my account’s progress in their Chinese course so that I can go through the whole thing again.

I’ve leaned on the gamification/completionist element in the past and same, when they updated I felt obliged to go back and clear all the levels again.

I wasn’t too happy with my relationship to / reliance on the gamification. Works well when it does work, is really demotivating when it doesn’t.

Yeah I just hit diamond and I suddenly went from being really excited to look at the leaderboard to absolutely dreading it. Before diamond I was consistently in the top 3-5 every week, now I’m like grinding lessons just to not drop down. It’s good though because it does make me want to learn more.

    Recently started Busuu for Russian

The quality is far better than that of Duolingo and I’ve been enjoying it

To commit to my language learning I paid for a full year of premium Duolingo. I’m on my 140th day I think and I’m kind of regretting my choice.

So now I’m just gonna finish the whole thing, and after the full year I was thinking of switching to Busuu. I tried in it the past and I have to agree that the courses have more study material than those of Duo’s.

To compensate I’m testing investing more time per day to advance a little faster. I was thinking of posting a review once I finish a whole year.
