The one word I was expecting to hear in this video which was completely missing was “Leadership”. A manager is almost always in a role of leadership. The video’s creator seems to suggest managers are a recent invention (within the last 120 years or so). Is the video’s creator just using word play to suggest that there weren’t middle level leaders besides the very top level of owner?

Without a leader, who determines what needs to be done next? To whom is responsible for making sure the resources are properly acquired for the people doing the work? Is the video’s creator suggesting that each worker is 100% responsible for acquiring their own materials, tasks, and getting direction from the owner of the company?

These statements are not in defense of all managers/leaders. There is a HUGE number of people that are in management/leadership roles that have no business being there either because of their own incompetence or sociopathy. Holding the title of manager or leader does nothing to imbue the skills necessary for the job to the person. Good leaders understand that they only succeed when those they lead are empowered, supported, and protected from internal and external dangers. A good leader understands that very frequently they, the leader, is the least important person on the team.
