Japan only surrendered after the second bomb and even that almost didn’t happen due to a plot to prevent the surrender from occurring by people in the Japanese military that were intent on continuing to fight the war.

The bombs were atrocities. That said, I don’t think a lot of people today comprehend just how fucked up and terrible Japan’s military culture actually was around that time.
