I had the occasion as a child in the 80’s to stay at a cabin on a mountain in the middle of nowhere.

The night sky was unlike anything I had seen before or since; the milky way was indeed a pure river of speckled white light that ran from horizon to horizon. You couldn’t hold out your thumb at arms length without blocking some star or galaxy anywhere in the sky.

Much like the grand canyon, pictures just can’t do it justice. Makes me wonder what it must have looked like 200 years ago.

Humanity robbed itself of a true treasure if you ask me.

Your experience reminds me of the time I was sailing on the Java Sea. On deck at night, lit by starlight, I could look up and see the Milky Way from horizon to horizon. It was the closest I’ve ever come to having a transcendent religious experience, like I was in direct connection with the infinite.

Humanity robbed itself of a true treasure if you ask me.
