Pretty sure they saw the steamdeck and immediately went to work on an “Xbox” experience for PCs and handhelds. Which is actually incredibly frustrating as someone who saw most consoles released after the Wii for what they were. Simply a PC with worse graphics and yet another version of the game devs needed to make. Plus PC ports of “console” games mostly sucked and in some cases the game’s graphics were nerfed on PC because of their console focus.

Why do they need an Xbox to sell someone if you can just download the app on your own Windows system or simply install the Xbox app on a handheld. Most likely a streaming and local gaming solution.

This is what Microsoft has been actively moving towards since at least the planning of windows 8.

Why bother losing money on physical consoles when you can get people to pay for xbox live on pc?

Right, they released the Xbox companion around that time I think? I wouldn’t say they were necessary on course for what we are talking about today, until recently. But yeah, something in the ballpark.

I really hope they refrain from pushing devs into building WUP programs. That would kill the steamdeck and Linux gaming.

They tried and failed to get people to pay for Xbox Live on PC. I’m surprised they still charge for it on consoles.
