Is anyone here going through the same situation? I usually consume content about films, series, anime, etc. But out of nowhere my feed started recommending racist, Nazi and right-wing content. I’m not saying that right-wingers are Nazis or racists, I’m saying that right-wing content is appearing to me alongside racist and Nazi content. Anyone here having the same problem?

That’s what Elon wants you to see.

Not just on a personal level, but the algorithm knows if you get hooked, you’re gonna be on the platform a lot.

Like, you’re basically asking why your shady drug dealer keeps trying to get you to try meth.

They care about profit more than you’re well being. So they’re throwing an addictive thing at you at every opportunity

I want to add that I’ve left Twitter to escape its right wingness even before Musk bought the platform.

Though he may have fanned the fire, he bought an already extremist right wing platform.

    1. They auto-promote anyone with a blue check, which are disproportionately elon stans, which are increasingly nazis.

    2. The Russian troll farms are active on Xitter.

    3. The algorithm likes engagement. The actual nazis, the trolls, and the useful idiots are only feeding each other since that’s a huge portion of accounts left on that site.

3b. The negative interactions are still counted as “engagement” so anybody commenting against it is unfortunately just fueling it

My rule is even though I still begrudgingly use twitter, I stay the hell away from the for you feed and stay on the following feed.

The answer to your question is that Musk is a right wing propagandist.

Yes, I have had the same experience for a few months now. Unfortunately a few communities I’m part of are still bound to that site so I have to sift through it constantly.

Twitter died a few years ago and was replaced by something else, now the skin-suit is starting to rot and peel revealing the beast that assumed its flesh.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Twitter is pushing it due to it being proven that outrage boosts engagement. Facebook has been doing that for years.

Elon is paying a lot of money to try to swing the political spectrum way far to the right. At this point everyone else has left.

    Why haven’t you?

      Why haven’t you?

Because it’s completely untrue that “everyone else has left.”

Hyperbole would be saying that everyone left when it was only 70% of people…but it’s probably more like 10-20% - the Twitter exodus was even smaller than the Reddit exodus. It’s incredibly easy to avoid the bots and Nazis if you use Twitter to interact with friends

if you use Twitter to interact with friends

If that’s what you use it for, why don’t you just pick up the goddamn phone to talk to your friends, and ditch the piece of shit that is X.

I believe the vast majority of people are using twitter on phone. Or are you implying that instead of social media we should be calling our friends by a phone? Ew…

OK Grampa (I say this as someone in my 50s) - but that’s not the same kind of communication that twitter is for.

Back in my grandparents’ youth people would write letters to each other and send them through the mail, but the phone is good for other kinds of interaction, just like social media is good for yet other kinds of interaction.

I’ll just conference call and group text pictures, good idea. I’ll also ask the acquaintances I’ve met on Twitter to pass me their phone numbers - I’m sure they’ll be OK with that! Especially at 2am when I think of a silly joke.

If there’s anyone left to ask, that is. EVERYONE left already.

It’s a total culture shock any time I check twitter. After browsing user-moderated spaces (like lemmy or reddit) for so long, I’ve gotten used to very rarely seeing anything more than a mildly conservative opinion. Seeing extreme right-wing stuff, outside of spammers trying to shock people, is almost non-existent.

Then you open twitter and get reminded what largely unmoderated internet looks like again.

There’s still good content mixed in with everything, but right wing outrage bait is absolutely winning the algorithm battle over there.

Your user moderated spaces are also spaces where you choose your own information bubble, the same goes with Mastodon. So you’re only seeing extreme right wing content if that’s what you selected. Simple as.

It is, there are largely unmoderated spaces on Reddit and Mastodon (probably also on Lemmy), there are specifically extremist right wing spaces on Reddit, Lemmy and Mastodon as well. You don’t have to see those, you chose wether you see those, that’s the beauty of it! Twitter only has one largely unmoderated space and just shoves whatever that produces into your face.

Twitter’s algorithm, like most social media companies, promotes rage bait on purpose because angry users are users that get into flame wars with other users and as a result, raise engagement metrics to show advertisers.

It might stop if you just don’t engage for long enough, but honestly, just consider a different site altogether if you need microblog stuff in your system, Twitter is going the way of Blockbuster.
