    What is the purpose of this community? Like I get it’s for posting unpopular opinions, but to what end?

    I ask this because personally I think it’s found a bit of a sweet spot between unpopular but still having merit with the mix of people upvoting based on agreement and what they think would be unpopular. There’s no real interesting discussion if no one agrees with it. Or is it just a contest to see who can say something everyone else disagrees with?

      People want unexpected controversial unpopular opinions. By way of example, “videogames are not fun” might seem generally unpopular but then the post gets a ton of comments corroborating the idea. Seems like those get the most attention.

        There’s definitely an element of triviality that makes it fun.

        “Pizza is the worst kind of pie” “Fish are better pets than dogs or cats” “I love Nickelback”

        If someone came in and said something truly unpopular, but actively harmful to a particular group of people or antagonistic, of course it’s going to be downvoted.

        This isn’t a community meant as a soapbox for hateful or cynical opinions, it’s a community meant to be entertained by people with weird but passionate opinions.

      Where else are you going to go if you want to get something off your chest?

      It would be rude (and instantly deleted) if your went to a knitting community and posted “I think knitting is for pansies” but if you post it here, people will still disagree with you but they’ll actually engage with your idea because this is the place for airing out that kind of opinion.

      It’s a safe space
